How to create an invoice in HoneyBook
HoneyBook invoices can be created as standalone documents or as part of a Smart File. Here is the standalone flow:
- 1Log in to your HoneyBook account and open a project or create a new one.
- 2From the project view, click "Add file" and select "Invoice".
- 3Add your line items: name, quantity, rate, and tax if applicable.

- 5Share the invoice link with your client, who can pay by card or bank transfer directly from the link.
HoneyBook does not offer a real-time PDF preview. To see what your client will receive, you need to open the shareable link in a separate view. There is also no native option to download a standalone PDF for sending by email outside the platform.
How to create a quote in HoneyBook
HoneyBook doesn't have a standalone "quote" document type. Proposals are the closest equivalent, typically built as Smart Files:
- 1Inside a project, click "Add file" and choose "Smart File" or start from a proposal template.
- 2Add a proposal section describing your services, then append a contract and invoice block to the same file.
- 3Customize pricing in the invoice block — you can define packages but cannot group line items into named sections with individual subtotals.
- 4Send the Smart File link to your client, who reviews the proposal, signs the contract, and pays the invoice in one flow.
HoneyBook's proposal format works well for a creative brief or service overview, but it isn't suited to detailed line-item quotes broken into phases or trade categories. You can't create independent groups each with its own subtotal, and you can't embed reference images in individual line items.
